Observations on the larval biology in the genus Calydon (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) with new records in Patagonia, Argentina Rev. Soc. Entomol. Argent.
Rizzuto,Susana.
20 specimens of Calydon submetallicum were collected from "roble pellín" (Nothofagus obliqua), an introduced species in the forests of western Chubut Province (Argentina). Larval tunnels and pupal chambers of Calydon submetallicum (Blanchard) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) are described in detail following the method proposed by Di Iorio, and the pupal chamber is illustrated for the first time. A revision of the host plants and updated distribution range of the genus is presented.

Oceanographic and faunistic structures across an Angola Current intrusion into northern Namibia waters. OceanDocs
John, H.C.H.; Mohrholz, V.; Lutjeharms, J.R.E..
It is thought that the penetration of Angolan waters through the Angola–Benguela Frontal Zone (ABFZ) into the much cooler Benguela regime may come about by a poleward slope undercurrent as well as by cross-frontal filaments. To test this hypothesis, two zonal transects off the northern Namibian coast were surveyed by CTD casts, current measurements and ichthyoplankton samples during April 1999. Simultaneous sea-surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll-a concentration, and wind data were obtained from satellite. The multidisciplinary results are described. An intense intrusion of the Angola Current into northern Namibian waters occurred with distinct signals of high temperatures and salinities, low chlorophyll-a concentration, and Angolan fish larvae of both...

Ontogenèse des fonctions digestives et besoins nutritionnels chez les larves de poissons marins ArchiMer
Cahu, Chantal; Zambonino, Jose-luis.
The production of fish larvae by hatchery shows an intensive increase for several species, but the specific nutritional requirements of larvae were poorly known until some years. We have conducted several experiments aimed to understand the specificities in larvae digestion, and to formulate a compound diet taking into account the differences compared to juveniles. The chosen species was the European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, and the data were validated on different species. Larvae were fed live preys or experimental compound diet, especially formulated for the experiment. It appeared that pancreatic digestive enzymes, such as trypsin and amylase could be assayed in early ontogenesis, before mouth opening, and increase dramatically during the first...

Ontogenic changes in the contents of dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin in larvae and postlarvae of the bivalve Pecten maximus ArchiMer
Cann Moisan, Christine; Nicolas, Laurence; Robert, Rene.
In the present study, norepinephrine (NE), epinephrine (E), dopamine (DA) and 5-hydroxy-tryptamine (5HT) have been quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) in Pecten maximus during larval and post-larval development. With average values ranging from 2 to 5 pg mug(-1) of protein, NE remained low through the whole larval life, while epinephrine (E) was undetected. DA and 5HT were the most abundant monoamines with significant variations between larval, pre-metamorphic and post-larval stages. During the first 20 days, corresponding to D larval and umboned larval stages, levels of DA and 5HT increased from 15 to 30 and 10 to 15 pg mug(-1) of protein, respectively. Then during the last week of larval life, at the approach of metamorphosis, DA...

Osmoregulation pattern and salinity tolerance of the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) during post-embryonic development ArchiMer
Chong-robles, Jennyfers; Charmantier, Guy; Boulo, Viviane; Lizarraga-valdez, Joel; Enriquez-paredes, Luis M.; Giffard-mena, Ivone.
The euryhaline white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei lives in both coastal and oceanic areas through ontogeny. Its osmoregulation pattern and variations in its tolerance to salinity are partially known from several studies under different experimental conditions (developmental stages, salinities and acclimation procedures). Although L. vannamei is recognized as one of the most euryhaline penaeid species, with adults and juveniles exhibiting an hyper-hypo-osmoregulatory pattern and being able to tolerate a wide salinity range, little is known on larval and early postlarval strategies to cope with salinity fluctuations. In order to establish their euryhalinity range and to fully understand the ontogenetic changes in L. vannamei osmoregulatory pattern, we...

Phenotypic and genetic consequences of size selection at the larval stage in the Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) ArchiMer
Taris, Nicolas; Ernande, Bruno; Mccombie, Helen; Boudry, Pierre.
The life histories of oysters in the genus Crassostrea, like those of most marine bivalves, are typified by high fecundity and low survival in nature. Rearing conditions in hatcheries however ensure optimized density, diet, and temperature. Hatcheries are becoming increasingly important for the production of juveniles in aquaculture, and their culture practices often include culling of slow growing larvae to reduce and synchronize the time taken to reach settlement. Because previous studies have found substantial genetic variation for early life developmental traits in Crassostrea gigas, these culling practices are likely to cause highly different selective pressures in hatcheries from those in the natural environment. We studied the phenotypic and genetic...

Physiological and biochemical changes associated with massive mortality events occurring in larvae of American oyster (Crassostrea virginica) ArchiMer
Genard, Bertrand; Pernet, Fabrice; Lemarchand, Karine; Boudry, Pierre; Moraga, Dario; Tremblay, Rejean.
In this paper, biochemical and physiological analyses were used to characterize changes associated with mortality event occurred during veliger development of American oyster, Crassostrea virginica. Biochemical analyses included the evaluation of lipid classes, fatty acid composition and total protein content. Larval physiology was evaluated by studying feeding activity, enzymes related to energy metabolism, oxidative stress levels and enzymatic antioxidant defenses. These analyses were complemented by bacterial community analyses as well as by measuring larval oyster performance. We observed that mortality events coincided with (1) strong changes in the surrounding bacterial community; (2) a progressive decrease in feeding activity; (3) higher levels of...

Population genetics of the European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) : from larvae to populations ArchiMer
Boudry, Pierre; Launey, Sophie; Diaz-almela, E.; Naciri-graven, Yamama; Ledu, Christophe; Mira, Sara; Taris, Nicolas; Bonhomme, Francois; Lapegue, Sylvie.
Nowadays, PCR-based DNA markers allow the study of diversity and differentiation of marine organisms at different stages of their life cycle. Our study of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) populations has aimed to describe their spatial and temporal dynamics. First, we analyzed adults sampled over the natural range of the species. An Atlantic/Mediterranean differentiation pattern was observed. Results were congruent between allozymes, microsatellites and mitochondrial DNA and support an isolation by distance model. High variability was observed in the breadth of diversity between populations using a mitochondrial marker, this highlights the small effective population sizes in some locations. A 10-fold quantitative difference was observed in Fst...

Problems related to the lack of functional swimbladder in intensive rearing of the seabass Dicentrarchus labrax and the sea bream Sparus auratus . ArchiMer
Chatain, Beatrice.
The primordial inflation of swimbladder normally occurs at a size of 4 to 5 mm in sea bream Sparus auratus and 5 to 6 mm in sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax . However, in intensive larval rearing conditions, lack of inflation is often observed and leads to the production of up to 80% of postlarvae whose swimbladder is not functional. They are, on the average, 20-30% smaller in weight than normal fry. Their survival rate can also be reduced by any kind of stress such as weaning, handling or hypoxic conditions. It is suggested that the selective mortality which affects the abnormal fish results both from a decrease in predatory efficiency and an increase in energetic needs.

Protein hydrolysates from yeast and pig blood as alternative raw materials in microdiets for gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) larvae ArchiMer
Gisbert, Enric; Skalli, Ali; Fernandez, Ignacio; Kotzamanis, Yannis; Zambonino, Jose Luiz; Fabregat, Rogelio.
In this study, we have evaluated the incorporation of two types of protein hydrolysates at 9 and 12% levels of inclusion, one from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, YPH) and another one from pig blood (PBPH), in microdiets for gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurora) larvae, and compared these results to a microdiet containing fish protein hydrolysate and another group only fed with enriched live prey (rotifers and Artemia). The trial consisted in substituting up to 75% (wt/wt) the enriched Artemia with the experimental microdiets from 15 to 40 days post-hatch, whereas larvae were exclusively fed on microdiets from 40 to 55 dph. Protein hydrolysates used in the present study were obtained from different raw materials (yeast, pig blood and fish protein...

Protein requirements of Penaeid shrimp. ArchiMer
Kanazawa, A.
Proteins are indispensable nutrients for growth and maintenance of live of all animals. The optimum protein levels in diets for shrimps are different among the various species. Squid meal is an effective protein source for many penaeids. The effects of dietary protein, lipid, and carbohydrate levels on the growth and survival of larvae of Penaeus japonicus were examined by feeding trials using purified diet with carrageenan as a binder. As a result, the effects of protein levels on growth and survival of P. japonicus larvae varied with dietary carbohydrate levels but not dietary lipid levels.
